Parshuram Jayanti 2026: Why did Lord Vishnu have to take the incarnation of Parashuram? Know the mythological story behind it

Story of Parshuram Avatar: Every year the festival of Akshaya Tritiya is celebrated on the Tritiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Vaishakh month. Lord Parashuram’s birth anniversary is also celebrated on this day. Lord Parashuram is the sixth incarnation of Shri Hari Vishnu, the protector of the world. Mythological belief is that Lord Parashuram had incarnated on the Tritiya day of Vaishakh Shukla Paksha. This year Parshuram Jayanti will be celebrated on 19th April.

The incarnation of Parshuram ji is considered fierce. According to the legend, in ancient times a king named Sahastrabahu used to rule in a city named Mahishmati. King Sahastrabahu was very cruel. There was no such thing as mercy in him. The king used to torture the people a lot. Due to which the townspeople became upset with the king. Then Mother Earth reached the shelter of Lord Vishnu.

Sri Hari already knew why Mother had come to seek refuge in him. Lord Vishnu told Mother Earth that soon the atrocities of King Sahastrabahu would end. Shri Hari told Mother that when the unrighteous try to destroy the religion, then he definitely incarnates to establish the religion. Shri Hari further said that he would be born as a son in the house of Maharishi Jamadagni and would kill Sahastrabahu.

Parshuram ji killed King Sahastrabahu

After some time, Lord Vishnu incarnated in the form of Parashuram on the Tritiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Vaishakh. After this, Lord Parashuram killed King Sahastrabahu and freed the townspeople from his fear and terror. Parashuram’s incarnation is described in detail in Vishnu Purana.
