The problem of high blood pressure is increasing rapidly all over the world. In medical language it is called hypertension. There are crores of high BP patients in India and many of them are not even aware of this disease.
If blood pressure remains high for a long time, it increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney disease and premature death. To control high BP, people have to take medicine regularly. The biggest problem is that in many patients blood pressure is not controlled despite taking medicines. Scientists have now discovered a new medicine to overcome this problem, which will work even if other medicines fail and will control BP.
According to the report of Science Daily Baxdrostat is a new medicine developed to control uncontrolled blood pressure. This medicine has emerged as a ray of hope for those patients on whom other medicines to control BP are not working and the blood pressure remains uncontrolled. The way this medicine works is also special. Baxdrostat controls Aldosterone, a hormone produced in the body. This hormone helps in maintaining the balance of salt and water in the body, but when its quantity becomes excessive, water and salt start accumulating in the body, due to which blood pressure increases. Baxdrostat works directly at the root of the problem by stopping the production of this hormone.
According to scientists, this medicine can be especially useful for those patients who have resistant hypertension i.e. high blood pressure which is not controlled despite many medicines. This discovery is not only important in terms of treatment, but it also helps in understanding that increased levels of aldosterone play a big role in this problem. This medicine has also been found to be safe and effective in the long run. Around 130 crore people around the world are affected by high blood pressure, out of which a large number are in India and China. In such a situation, a new medicine like Baxdrostat can prove to be a relief for crores of people in future. However, Phase 3 clinical trial of this medicine has just taken place. It will need many trials and approvals before coming into the market. The results so far indicate that this drug can make a big difference in the treatment of high blood pressure.
The effectiveness of this medicine was tested in a recently conducted international Phase-3 clinical trial. About 800 patients from 214 clinics around the world were included in this study. All these were patients whose blood pressure was very high despite the ongoing treatment. The research was led by Professor Brian Williams of University College London (UCL) and its results were presented at the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Congress 2025. The results of this study were quite encouraging. In patients who received bexadrostat, their systolic blood pressure dropped by an average of 9 to 10 mmHg, which is considered a significant drop. Reduction of this level can reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke and kidney related diseases to a great extent. The special thing was that the blood pressure of about 40% of the patients reached normal levels, whereas this figure was less than 20% in those taking placebo.
