Jo Adell Achieves Historic Defensive Feat with Three Home Run Robberies in Angels’ Victory

In a remarkable display of defensive prowess, Jo Adell of the Los Angeles Angels made history by robbing three home runs during a 1-0 victory against the Seattle Mariners on Saturday night in Anaheim, California.

This extraordinary performance drew praise from Torii Hunter, a nine-time Gold Glove Award winner, who described it as ‘probably the greatest defensive game I’ve ever seen.’ Adell’s final catch in the ninth inning involved a spectacular leap into the stands near the right-field foul pole.

Adell’s Unprecedented Defensive Achievement

Adell’s three home run-robbing catches set a new record in Major League Baseball, as he became the first player to achieve this feat since such statistics began tracking in 2004. His first catch denied Cal Raleigh a solo home run in the first inning, while a similar catch followed against Josh Naylor in the eighth inning.

In a thrilling ninth inning, J.P. Crawford hit a drive toward the right-field corner. Adell sprinted to the ball, leaped to catch it, and flipped over the low wall, landing in the first row of seats while holding up his glove to display the catch. The catch was confirmed after a replay review, further cementing his defensive legacy.

Hunter’s Enthusiastic Praise

Hunter, who served as a special assistant to the general manager, expressed his amazement at Adell’s performance, stating, ‘I’ve never seen three home run robberies in one game, and I’ve never seen a guy on the third one fall into the stands, catch the ball and keep his feet in like he’s a wide receiver.’ His excitement was palpable as he recounted the moment, saying, ‘I was jumping up and down. I almost passed out.’

Adell, who has made significant strides defensively since his earlier struggles, attributed part of his success to Hunter’s mentorship. He noted, ‘His impact has been huge. It’s a mindset of going to get the baseball, being aggressive.’

Mariners’ Reaction and Future Outlook

The Mariners were so impressed by Adell’s defensive capabilities that a message was left in their clubhouse stating, ‘Game plan – Don’t hit the ball to Joseph Adell.’ Mariners manager Dan Wilson acknowledged the uniqueness of Adell’s performance, saying, ‘We’re still very, very early in the season. We’ve got a long way to go, and that was something that’s probably never been done in a game before.’

As the season progresses, Adell’s defensive skills will be a focal point for both his team and their opponents, underscoring his evolution as a key player for the Angels.
