According to the mythological story described in the scriptures, once sage Pulastya, who was on a pilgrimage, saw the very beautiful and supernatural Govardhan Mountain when he reached near Dronachal Mountain. The divinity of the mountain mesmerized the sage. The idea of taking this mountain to Kashi came to his mind, so that he could serve and worship the mountain. He told Dronachal Parvat that he wanted to take his son Govardhan with him.
Despite the grief of the loss of his son, Mount Dronachal did not deny sage Pulastya, but then Govardhan put a condition before sage Pulastya. Govardhan told the sage that he was ready to go with him, but wherever he placed him, he would settle there and would never rise from there again. The sage accepted this condition out of arrogance of his penance.

After this, the sage picked up the huge mountain on his palm and headed towards Kashi. As soon as Rishi Pulastya reached Braj Mandal, the desire arose in the mind of Govardhan Parvat to become a witness to the upcoming Leelas of Shri Krishna. The mountain started increasing its weight. The sage suddenly started feeling tired and forgot his word. To rest, he placed the mountain down on Braj land.
After resting, when the sage started lifting the mountain, Govardhan did not hesitate and reminded the sage of the condition. Still, sage Pulastya tried hard, but Govardhan did not move from his place. After this the sage became very angry. He cursed Govardhan Mountain. He told Govardhan Parvat that you have created an obstacle in my path, hence from today onwards your pride will be broken. Every day you will shrink to the size of a mole and one day you will completely disappear into the earth.
