Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder in which the level of glucose (sugar) in the blood remains continuously elevated. The main reason for this is less production of insulin or the body not being able to use insulin properly.

The Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, while spreading awareness about the main symptoms of diabetes mellitus, appealed to the people not to ignore the signals of their body. According to the ministry, diabetes is a metabolic disorder in which the level of glucose in the blood increases and it affects the body in many ways. Complications can be prevented by its timely identification and investigation. The most common and classical symptoms of diabetes are known as the ‘three P’s’.

frequent urination
These include polyuria i.e. frequent and excessive urination. Due to high blood glucose, the kidneys try to remove excess glucose, which increases urination.

feeling very thirsty
The second is polydipsia i.e. excessive thirst. Due to frequent urination, there is water deficiency in the body, due to which one feels constant thirst.

excessive hunger
Whereas, the third is polyphagia which includes excessive hunger. The body is unable to get glucose for energy, hence hunger increases, but weight still continues to decrease.

other signs
Apart from these, there are other signs too, like weight loss without any reason. Involves feeling constant fatigue and weakness.

Get tested if symptoms appear
According to experts, if these symptoms appear, get your blood sugar checked immediately. Do not ignore these signals of the body and take it seriously. By controlling diabetes in time, serious physical problems like heart disease, kidney problems, eye problems and nerve damage can be avoided.

Make changes in lifestyle
By recognizing the early symptoms of diabetes, it can be managed well with lifestyle changes, balanced diet, exercise and necessary medicines. The Ministry of AYUSH also emphasizes on diabetes management through Ayurveda, Yoga and other traditional medical systems. Regular checkups and awareness provide relief.
