INS Aridhaman submarine: India’s indigenous nuclear submarine INS Aridhaman and warship INS Taragiri were inducted into the Navy in the presence of Defense Minister Rajnath Singh in Visakhapatnam. This has given a major boost to India’s maritime and nuclear deterrence capability.

India’s maritime power got a major boost today, when the country’s indigenous nuclear submarine INS Aridhaman was formally inducted into the Indian Navy. On this occasion, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh participated in the Navy program organized in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.

Before the commissioning, the Defense Minister wrote on social media platform The inclusion of this submarine equipped with nuclear power and ballistic missiles in the Navy is considered to be a major increase in India’s strategic strength and nuclear deterrence capability.

Why is INS Aridaman special?

INS Aridhaman is India’s third nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN). This submarine can move at a speed of about 44 kilometers per hour under the sea and its biggest specialty is that it is very difficult to track underwater.

This submarine is equipped with deadly ballistic missiles like K-15 Sagarika and K-4 Missile. Experts believe that with its inclusion, India’s nuclear deterrence has become even stronger.

bigger and more powerful than ever

According to defense experts, INS Aridhaman is bigger and more powerful than the earlier two submarines in terms of size and capacity. The fourth nuclear submarine of this series is currently undergoing sea trials. It is expected that it will also be included in the Navy by next year.

Which submarines were there before Aridman?

India’s nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine project began with INS Arihant.

  • INS Arihant was launched in July 2009 and commissioned into the Navy in 2016.
  • After this, the second submarine INS Arighaat was commissioned in August 2024.

Now with the addition of INS Aridman, India has three nuclear ballistic missile submarines.

INS Taragiri also became the strength of Navy

Indian Navy got another big gift in this program. The warship INS Taragiri, built with indigenous technology, was also inducted into the Navy. This ship is the fourth powerful frigate built under Project 17A and more than 75 percent indigenous material has been used in it. This warship weighing about 6,670 tonnes is equipped with modern stealth technology, which makes it difficult to detect on enemy radar.

Great example of ‘Make in India’

INS Taragiri has been built by Mumbai government company Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited. More than 200 MSMEs i.e. small and medium industries of the country took part in the construction of this ship. This is the reason why it is being considered a major achievement of the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
