Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday congratulated the team of four Indian students who won gold medals in the 58th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) 2026. This Olympiad was held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan from July 10 to 19, 2026.
Hailing this achievement as the country’s best ever performance at this prestigious global platform, the Prime Minister said that this success of the young scientists will inspire countless others to achieve excellence in the field of science.
PM Modi wrote on Twitter, “India’s youth power is making its mark on the global stage! Congratulations to our team’s Debdutt Priyadarshi, Harshit Singhal, Kabir Chillar and Sandeep Kuchi for winning the gold medal in the 58th International Chemistry Olympiad. It was India’s best performance on this prestigious platform.”
The Prime Minister further said, “His talent, dedication and passion for science has made the entire nation proud. It will also inspire countless young minds to study Chemistry and excel in it.”
Students also proved their mettle in Biology and Physics Olympiad
Moreover, in a separate post on Twitter, the Prime Minister congratulated the medal-winning student team from India. “It is a matter of immense pleasure that at the 37th International Biology Olympiad held in Vilnius, Lithuania, all four members of the Indian team achieved medals, including a gold. Proud of Bhavya Gunwal, Saumil Maiti, Nishit Kalani and Anmol Kumar for their success in the Olympiad. They have studied Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, Animal Physiology, Animal Morphology and Systematics along with Having demonstrated immense knowledge in subjects like Plant Computational Biology, I am sure this success will encourage many more youngsters.”
What is International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO)?
The International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) is the world’s leading annual competition designed for secondary school students. This global event, started in 1968, gathers the brightest young minds in chemistry from around the world to test their skills in rigorous theoretical and practical examinations.
India’s best performance so far in IChO
In the country-wise medal table, India was placed joint first with China, Vietnam and individual participant Group B (from Russia). This year’s IChO had 363 students from 93 countries, making it the largest IChO ever. This is India’s best performance at the IChO, with everyone winning gold medals for the first time! This was India’s 27th appearance in the IChO. In all these years, 32% of our students have got gold medals, 51% have got silver medals and 17% have got bronze medals. In the last ten presentations, the percentage of gold and silver medals has been 43% and 53% respectively.
India’s excellent record in IBO
There were 307 students from 78 countries competing in the 37th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) 2026 held in Vilnius, Lithuania from 12-19 July this year. A total of 31 gold, 61 silver and 91 bronze medals were awarded. This was India’s 26th appearance in the IBO. Of the 104 students so far, 17 have received gold medals, 69 have received silver, 17 have received bronze and 1 has received honorable mention. Over the last ten years, gold and silver rates have been 25% and 68% respectively.
Flag hoisted in Physics Olympiad also
Earlier, India had performed brilliantly at the 56th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) 2026 in Bucaramanga, Colombia, with all five of its team members winning gold medals and the country jointly securing the world No. 1 rank. India shared the top spot with China, Kazakhstan, Russia, South Korea and Taiwan, with 381 students from 87 countries participating in the competition. The Indian gold medalists are Kanishk Jain (Pune, Maharashtra), Ridesh Anant Bendle (Indore, Madhya Pradesh), Rishit Garg (Dwarka, New Delhi), Shrestha Suraiya (Mumbai, Maharashtra) and Swarit Joshi (Ahmedabad, Gujarat).
