Mumbai: Nine persons were injured in a stampede while attempting to board the Bandra-Gorakhpur Express (22921) at Bandra railway station in Mumbai.
The stampede occurred around 5:56 am on platform number one, as passengers rushed to board the train, according to officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
In the attempt to board the train, some people fell on the platform when they came in between two coaches.
Prima facie, the people fell on the platform after colliding with the coaches or in the space between two coaches, the sources said.
“Ideally, doors of the coaches are opened after the train makes a halt at the platform and passengers then board in a queue,” a WR source said.
The injured were swiftly transported to Bhabha Hospital, where two individuals remain in critical condition.
The victims have been identified as Shabhir Abdul Rehman (40), Parmeshwar Sukhdar Gupta (28), Ravindra Harihar Chuma (30), Ramsevak Ravindra Prasad Prajapati (29), Sanjay Tilakram Kangay (27), Divyanshu Yogendra Yadav (18), Mohammad Shareef Shaikh (25), Indrajith Sahani (19), and Noor Mohammad Shaikh (18).
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut criticized the central government’s handling of railway safety, stating, “Since Modi govt has come into power for the third term and the railway minister has been given the responsibility again, more than 25 major railway accidents have occurred in the country claiming more than 100 lives… You talk about Bullet trains, Metro and high-speed trains and Nitin Gadkari talks about running Buses in the air. But, what is the reality on the ground? The way passengers were injured, isn’t the railway minister responsible for this?…”
