Question: When will the recommendations of the 8th Pay Commission be considered applicable?
answer: This is the biggest question. Generally, the employees expected that even if the recommendations come late, they will be considered effective from January 1, 2026 and they will get arrears. But, the government has made it clear in the Parliament that no decision has been taken yet on the ‘date of implementation’. The Minister of State for Finance said in clear words, “8th pay commission “The government will decide the date of implementation.” This means that at present the date of January 1, 2026 has not been officially approved by the government.
Question: When is the commission’s report expected?
answer: The government has said that the work of the commission has started. The Finance Ministry had released the ‘Terms of Reference’ (ToR) for the Commission on 3 November 2025. According to the rules, the Commission may take about 18 months from the date of issue of notification to submit its report. According to this, the final report of the commission is likely to come by the middle of the year 2027.
Question: How much can salary and pension increase?
answer: The entire mathematics of salary increase depends on ‘fitment factor’. In the 7th Pay Commission this factor was 2.57. Experts believe that in the 8th Pay Commission it can be increased to 2.86 or more. If this happens, then a huge increase of about 30% to 34% can be seen in the old salary and pension. Besides, increased dearness allowance (DA/DR) will also be added to the new basic pay.
Question: How many people will benefit from this and does the government have funds?
answer: According to government data, there are 50.14 lakh central employees and about 69 lakh pensioners in the country. That means overall more than 1.19 crore people will get direct benefits from it. As far as money is concerned, the government has assured in Parliament that there is no need to worry about funding. As soon as the recommendations of the commission are approved, the government will arrange adequate funds in the budget to implement them.
