New Delhi: The Assam government has resumed its large-scale eviction campaign. Fresh evictions has been launched in the Goalpara district on Sunday to clear encroachments from the Dahikata Reserve Forest. Notices have been served to 580 families occupying around 1,140 bighas (approximately 153 hectares) of forest land.
“The entire stretch falls under the Dahikata Reserve Forest and has been encroached upon. The eviction drive is expected to take at least two days,” said Goalpara Deputy Commissioner Prodip Timung. Over 1,000 police and forest personnel have been deployed for the operation, according to Sunnydeo Indradeo Choudhury, Conservator of Forests, Central Assam Circle.
