1980: Central Bank of India released the first credit card

1990-2000: The economic liberalization of 1991 gave admission to global banking institutions in India. In this period, facilities like insurance, zero responsibility and reward point system were available.

2000-2010: Credit card with internet revolution became an important part of online shopping. IRCTC (2002), Makemytrip (2005), Flipkart (2007) made card payment everyday.

2010-2020: NPCI launched RuPay in 2012, leading to increased reach of cards in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.

After 2020: As of September 2022, 10 million cards were in the market, and in May 2025 there were 111.2 million active credit cards in the banking system.
