10-40 rounds of firing took place between two groups over drainage dispute in Mokama, Bihar. Police have arrested 4 people and registered an FIR against 16. This incident has increased tension in the area ahead of the 2025 elections.
Amidst the excitement of Bihar Assembly elections 2025, Mokama is once again filled with the smell of gunpowder. On Monday evening, a minor dispute regarding water drainage in Gosain village of Ghoswari police station area suddenly flared up so much that the whole area echoed with the sound of bullets. According to eyewitnesses, about 40 rounds were fired, while the police claims that about 10 rounds were fired. The echo of this firing not only shook the area but also created a stir in the political circles, because this is the same area which was once dominated by powerful leaders like Anant Singh and Suraj Bhan Singh.
The field became a battlefield in 10 minutes
The incident started around 6 pm on Monday evening when an altercation broke out between two groups over drainage in the fields near Gosain village. Within no time the matter turned into an issue of old political and criminal supremacy. According to the information, the dispute started between Dinesh Yadav and Rahul Kumar, but soon the conflict reached the factions of Diwakar Yadav and Mithilesh Yadav alias Mitthu Yadav. Both the groups have been trying to establish influence in the area for a long time, and now in the election season this conflict has openly taken to the streets.
Old rivalries increased during election season
Local people say that as soon as elections come in Mokama and surrounding areas, old rivalries and battles for supremacy start raising their heads again. The political equation here has been linked to the old rivalry between powerful leaders like Anant Singh and Suraj Bhan Singh. The influence of both rests on different factions and ethnic lines. Now that both the camps have become active in election preparations, even small incidents are giving big political signals.
Police said- 4 arrested, rest absconding
After the incident, Ghoswari police station chief Madhusudan Kumar said that the police took immediate action and arrested four people. The arrested people have been identified as Dinesh Yadav, Gannu Yadav, Ranjit Kumar and Rahul Kumar. FIR has been registered against a total of 16 named accused. The police team is continuously conducting raids in search of the absconding accused.
According to the police, empty cartridges and country-made weapons have also been recovered from the spot. At present, no one has been confirmed injured, but it is feared that some people have minor injuries and are hiding due to fear of treatment.
Mokama, the confluence of politics and muscle power
Mokama assembly seat is considered to be one of the most popular seats in Bihar. This is the same area where ‘Chhote Sarkar’ Anant Singh once had political resonance and where Suraj Bhan Singh’s family has also had a deep influence. The politics here has been based on caste equations, strongman influence and personal networks. In the last three decades, Mokama Tal area has been in the news repeatedly due to reports of firing, riots and mutual conflicts.
Security increased after firing, but fear remains
After the incident, police force has been deployed in the entire area. Teams of Ghoswari, Bakhtiyarpur and Maranchi police stations have also been alerted. SDPO Bakhtiyarpur said that the situation is under control. Both the parties have been identified. No one will be spared. However, locals believe that until the election fever subsides, it is difficult to expect peace.
