In the earlier post, we took a look at the .In this post, let us take a look at the midsize SUV segment (4.2m to 4.5m), which has continued to witness strong demand in May 2026, with total sales rising 68.2% year-on-year to 70,836 units, compared to 42,104 units sold in May 2025. However, on a month-on-month basis, segment volumes declined 4.4% from 74,098 units recorded in April 2026.
4.2m to 4.5m SUV Sales May 2026
Hyundai Creta and Creta Electric remained the highest-selling models in the segment with combined sales of 15,235 units in May 2026. The SUV registered a modest growth of 2.5% over 14,860 units sold in May 2025. Creta commanded a segment share of 21.5%, meaning more than one in every five midsize SUVs sold in the country during May carried the Creta badge. On a month-on-month basis, sales remained largely stable, declining marginally by 0.4%.

Maruti Suzuki’s new Victoris continued to make a strong impact in the segment. The SUV recorded sales of 10,853 units in May, securing the second position with a market share of 15.3%. Kia Seltos emerged as one of the biggest gainers in the segment. Sales increased by 74.2% year-on-year to 10,597 units, compared to 6,082 units sold in May 2025. The SUV secured third place with a 15% segment share.
Maruti Grand Vitara was close behind at 9,366 units, recording an impressive growth of 80.2% over last year’s 5,197 units. Grand Vitara also posted a healthy 21.4% month-on-month increase, making it one of the strongest performers during the month. Toyota Urban Cruiser HyRyder registered sales of 8,664 units, reflecting a growth of 14.4% over May 2025. The SUV continued to benefit from strong demand for hybrid powertrains and held a segment share of 12.2%.

Tata Sierra secured sixth place with sales of 6,606 units. As the model was not on sale during the corresponding period last year, a year-on-year comparison is not applicable. Tata Curvv and Curvv EV recorded combined sales of 1,680 units, witnessing a sharp decline of 45.2% compared to May 2025. However, volumes improved nearly 20% over April 2026.
MG ZS EV was among the biggest gainers, with sales jumping 333.9% year-on-year to 1,562 units. The electric SUV also recorded a strong 117.9% month-on-month growth. Skoda Kushaq crossed the 1,300-unit mark, registering sales of 1,310 units and a healthy 103.4% growth over last year. Volkswagen Taigun followed closely with 1,281 units, up 13.8%.

Renault Duster recorded sales of 1,267 units, while Honda Elevate managed 1,224 units, down 16.2% compared to May 2025. Mahindra BE 6 recorded 902 units, down 25.2% year-on-year. XUV400 sales stood at 129 units, a decline of 55%. MG Astor, Citroen C3 Aircross and Citroen Basalt continued to witness limited demand, with sales of 59 units, 58 units and 43 units respectively.
OEM Wise Performance
Maruti Suzuki emerged as the No 1 player in the 4.2m to 4.5m SUV segment with 20,219 units and 28.5% market share, driven by the strong performance of Victoris and Grand Vitara. Hyundai followed with 15,235 units, as Creta continued to be the best-selling individual model despite growing competition. Hyundai has planned a new 4.2m SUV launch (under Creta) later this FY, which will strengthen the company’s position in the segment.
Kia posted a healthy 74% YoY growth with Seltos crossing 10,500 units, while Toyota maintained strong momentum with HyRyder sales of 8,664 units. Tata Motors was another major gainer, with Sierra and Curvv helping the brand achieve 8,286 units, up over 170% YoY.
Among smaller players, MG recorded strong growth thanks to ZS EV, while Skoda Kushaq more than doubled its sales. In contrast, Honda, Mahindra and Citroen witnessed declines. Overall, the segment is increasingly dominated by Maruti, Hyundai, Kia, Toyota and Tata, which together account for nearly 89% of total sales.
