31,000 House Owners Get Shocking Tax Notice Over Parking Spaces, BBMP Responds

31,000 house owners in Bengaluru received an unexpected show-cause notice after a technical malfunction in the Bruhat Bengaluru MahanagaraPalike’s (BBMP) e-Khata system.

The notices triggered frustration and panic among the homeowners who got the notice from the municipal body for not including car parking areas in their property’s carpet size reports.

The residents claimed that the BBMP notices were issued without a proper verification of the original property documents. The issue grabbed attention on social media, prompting criticism of BBMP.

Some residents even claimed that they were not able to file objections on the e-Khata portal, which was expected to be smooth.

The residents have also emphasised the rushed implementation of the system and urged for a grace period and a support mechanism to assist the owners.

What did BBMP officials say?

Amid public criticism, BBMP officials attributed the issue to a software glitch. A recent software check in the Kauvery system identified discrepancies in property size data between e-Khata and the EPID database.

The e-Khata incorrectly included the parking slots in the carpet area, which led to increased tax liabilities on the owners.

The Times of India quoted the BBMP special commissioner (revenue), Munish Moudgil, as saying that these notices were meant for properties with over 5 per cent variation in data. But because of a software glitch, mass emails were sent to residents, many of whom were not at fault. Moudgil assured that the affected residents can appeal, and the issue would be resolved promptly.

The authorities have made the certificate mandatory for all property transactions in the city since July 1, 2025.
