New Delhi: In a tragic incident in Mozambique, at least three Indians died in a boat accident, and five remain missing. The mishap happened after a launch boat ferrying crew members of a tanker capsized during a crew transfer operation off the coast of Beira port in central Mozambique on Friday, October 17, confirmed by the Indian High Commission.
It was a routine transfer of crew members to a vessel anchored offshore. A total of 14 Indians were in the boat. Some were rescued immediately after the accident, but the majority of the people either died or are still missing. The reason for the tragedy is still unknown.
“A launch boat carrying crew members of a tanker, including 14 Indian nationals, capsized during crew transfer operations off Beira port in central Mozambique. Some of the Indian nationals involved in the accident have been rescued. Unfortunately, some Indian nationals have died in the accident, and some are still unaccounted for.” The Indian High Commission’s official statement after the incident.
One survivor is still in the hospital as he is receiving medical treatment after the incident in Beira. A consular officer from the Indian mission also went to look up for the survivor in the hospital and oversee the assistance and support.
The Indian High Commission offered commiseration via social media. “We convey our heartfelt condolences on the loss of lives, including those of three Indian nationals, in a boat accident off Beira port. Mission is in contact with families of those who have lost their lives in this unfortunate accident and is extending all possible assistance to them,” social media post stated.
The operation is still going on with the help of local authorities, maritime agencies, and the Indian Mission to locate the remaining five missing individuals. The Indian commission also shared the emergency numbers that can be helpful to get information or updates on the search operation.
Boat accident: Search and rescue efforts are underway. Mission is coordinating with local authorities regarding the missing 5 Indians.
