The BJP has retained control of the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC), winning 38 of the 44 seats in the civic elections. The Congress won five seats, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) failed to win any.
The results were announced on Tuesday, October 13, after votes polled on October 11 were counted. Elections were held across 11 wards, with four seats in each ward. A total of 130 candidates contested the election.
Both the BJP and Congress fielded candidates in all 44 seats, while AAP contested 32 seats.
BJP Retains Power With 38 Seats
The BJP continued its winning run in Gandhinagar, securing a comfortable majority in the municipal corporation. The party won all four seats in eight wards and three seats each in two other wards. Its biggest setback came in Ward 6, where Congress won all four seats.
Among the BJP candidates who won were Shilpaben Kanuji Thakor and Gaurang Sureshbhai Patel from Ward 1. In Ward 3, the winners included Mitalben Hardikbhai Khimsuriya, Sonaliben Urenkumar Patel, Ankit Ashwinbhai Barot and Umeshbhai Rameshchandra Jha.
The BJP also won all four seats in Ward 5. Its winning candidates there included Hemaben Manthankumar Bhatt, Dhvani Dhaval Shah, Kanaiyalal Gandabhai Desai and Kinjalkumar Dashrathbhai Patel.
The party had won 41 seats in the October 2021 elections. Its tally has now come down to 38, but the BJP has managed to retain a strong majority in the civic body.
Congress Wins Five Seats, Takes All Four In Ward 6
Congress finished the election with five seats, improving on its performance in 2021, when it won three. Its strongest showing came in Ward 6, where it won every seat and defeated all four BJP candidates.
Hansaben Lalitkumar Ninama won Seat 1, while Meghnaben Rajubhai Desai secured Seat 2. Mehulkumar Aravindbhai Rathod and Karmjitsinh Virendrasinh Vaghela won Seats 3 and 4, respectively.
Although Congress contested all 44 seats, its victories were limited to five. The sweep in Ward 6, however, gave the party a clear win in an otherwise BJP dominated election.
AAP Draws A Blank In Gandhinagar
The Aam Aadmi Party failed to win a single seat despite contesting 32 seats in the GMC elections.
The party did not field candidates in 12 seats. Of these, the BJP and Congress faced each other directly in nine seats, while AAP’s remaining three seats had no AAP candidates. Four of its nominations were rejected by the State Election Commission, and five candidates withdrew from the contest.
The result is a setback for AAP, which had won one seat in the previous election.
How BJP Established Its Hold Over Gandhinagar
The Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation was formed in 2010, and its first civic elections were held in 2011. Congress won that election, but the political picture changed in the years that followed.
The 2016 election ended in a tie, with the BJP and Congress winning 16 seats each. The BJP later gained control of the civic administration after a Congress councillor joined the party.
In the 2021 elections, the BJP strengthened its position by winning 41 of the 44 seats. This time, it has won 38 seats and retained power, while Congress has increased its tally from three to five. AAP, which had one seat after the previous election, has failed to win any this time.
The BJP’s reduced tally shows that it has lost some ground compared with 2021, but the party still has a clear majority in the Gandhinagar civic body.
