The early morning tremors came after a strong 5.9-magnitude earthquake in Myanmar days earlier, whose tremors were also felt in Kolkata and Bangladesh’s Dhaka.
Just like the Gonda quake, the earlier earthquake struck at a depth of 10 kilometres, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) said. The EMSC data put the epicentre around 70 miles east of Akyab in Myanmar.
A mild earthquake also rattled Sikkim’s Gyalshing region, triggering panic. The NCS said the quake struck at 1:09 am and measured 4.5 on the Richter scale. The tremors forced people out of their homes, with many staying outside for several minutes, fearing aftershocks.
