Tahawwur Rana 26/11 Case: Patiala House Court of Delhi allowed 3 phone calls this month to discuss the appointment of a lawyer to Tawwur Rana, accused of 26/11 Mumbai Terror Attack. Calls will be in Hindi or English.
Mumbai Terror Attack Tahawwur Rana: Delhi’s Patiala House Court has allowed Tawwur Rana, accused of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, to make three phone calls from his brother this month so that he can discuss the appointment of a lawyer for his legal defense. He will be able to make this phone call in Hindi or English. There will also be recording of his call. This recording will be done in the presence of an officer.
Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Chander Jeet Singh on Wednesday ordered that the accused Tahavvur Rana can make three phone calls to his brother this month. He has to make this phone call for his lawyer. He told in his order that these calls will be in Hindi or English, will be recorded and will be made in the presence of a senior jail officer. Also, the court extended Rana’s judicial custody till 8 September.

Documents are being investigated in Rana’s case
Rana’s lawyer Piyush Sachdev sought more time to examine the documents of the charge sheet and the supplementary charge sheet. The NIA filed a supplementary charge sheet against Rana on 9 July, including other procedural documents including arrest and seizure memo.

There was a dispute about phone facility earlier also
On August 1, the court rejected Rana’s application with regular phone call facility. However, in June, he was allowed to make a call to the family. The call was also made under the jail rules and under the supervision of the senior officer of Tihar Jail.
The NIA had told the court that during interrogation, Rana was encountered on concrete evidence related to the 26/11 attack. According to the agency, he was not cooperating and avoiding the answer, so further custody was necessary. Recently, NIA also took her voice and handwriting samples.
Extradition from America and background of 26/11 attack
Rana was extradited from the US in April 2024. The attack by Lashkar-e-Taiba killed more than 170 people and injured hundreds. The NIA filed the main charge sheet in December 2011.
