In Nadia district of West Bengal, some people informed the police that a person has more than 250 voter cards. On the basis of this information he was arrested. At present he is being interrogated as to where he got such a large number of voter cards from?
Kolkata/New Delhi. A man carrying 250 voter ID cards has been detained in Kalyani in Nadia district, days before the Election Commission begins the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in West Bengal. Election Commission officials say that there are 7.6 crore voters in Bengal. In such a situation, hundreds of voter ID cards obtained illegally have raised serious questions.
Man’s claim- Voter ID card found lying in the bushes
Police are trying to find out how so many voter ID cards reached Kalyani, who brought them there and who is behind it. When interrogated by the police, the man, a resident of Hind Motor in Hooghly district, told that he had come to his sister’s house in Kalyani area of Nadia. He claimed that he found some voter IDs lying in the bushes on the roadside, which he kept with himself. Suspecting that something was wrong, the local people informed the police about that person.
Election Commission asked for report from Nadia Collector
The Office of the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal has sought a detailed report from the Collector of Nadia regarding the recovered Voter ID card. BJP condemned Mamata Banerjee government over this incident. BJP MLA Ambika Roy claimed, “Free and fair elections have become a distant dream in West Bengal. Booth capturing and vote looting have become common under Mamata Banerjee’s rule. As long as Trinamool Congress is in power, free and fair elections are not possible there.”
