New Delhi: Software Technology Park of India (STPI), an autonomous society under the aegis of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), has contributed significantly to the creation of employment in the IT and ITeS segments in the Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities in India. STPI created around 2.98 lakh jobs in the non-metro cities. The information was shared by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.
“The employment reported by STPI-registered units in non-metro cities is 2,98,250 (as of 31st March 2025). In addition, approximately 9,800 jobs have been reported by startups from non-metro areas that are supported under the CoEs and the Next Generation Incubation Scheme (NGIS),” said the minister in the lower house.
Since its creation in 1991, the organization has contributed to the creation of an IT and ITeS (IT-enabled Services) ecosystem beyond the non-metro cities in the country. The society was formed under the recommendation of the Bhabha Committee of the Government of India.
As per Vaishnaw, a total of 68 STPI centers are working pan-India, significantly aiding in increasing software exports of the country. The body has established nine new centers in the last five years in Darbhanga, Jaipur, Koraput, Bhagalpur, Kochi, Davanagere, Kohima, Meerut, and Bhopal.
The body has a total outlay of Rs 445.77 crore, supporting 1121 startups through various schemes. A total of Rs 39.86 crore was disbursed as direct funding to 590 startups during the last 3 financial years. “The total software exports achieved by STPI-registered units is approximately Rs 10.64 lakh crore ($283 billion) in FY 2024–25,” said the minister further.
