A 15-year-old girl from Bihar who was allegedly being trafficked was rescued last week after the Delhi Police received information about a man attempting to sell her.
According to the Delhi Police, a team, along with the informer, laid a trap at New Delhi Railway Station after receiving the information last Thursday. The police said they spotted a suspicious man with a young girl. The police team then apprehended the suspect from the spot, and separated the girl for preliminary questioning.
The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Shashi Kumar, hailing from Arariya in Bihar, allegedly confessed during interrogation that he lured the girl under the pretext of helping her, and intended to sell her to ease his financial difficulties.
“During the preliminary inquiry, the girl revealed that she was a resident of Darbhanga in Bihar. She had left her home on May 6 following a dispute with her mother, and had boarded a train to Delhi with the intention of visiting her maternal aunt,” said Harsha Vardhan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central).
“During her journey, at Chhapra Railway Station, a person identifying himself as Shashi Kumar initiated a conversation with her and, upon hearing her situation, offered to take her to his brother’s house in Delhi.
However, once they reached New Delhi Railway Station, the accused tried to take her away forcibly, and threatened to sell her for Rs 2 lakh if she resisted,” said Vardhan.
The Delhi Police said a case has been registered at Police Station Kamla Market under sections 137(2) (kidnapping) and 144(1) (exploitation of a trafficked person) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and the accused has been arrested.
Further investigation is ongoing to uncover any trafficking networks linked to the accused, said the police.
