A13-year-old football player from North Carolina, Caden Sorrell, died after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest during practice, leaving his family, teammates, classmates and school community devastated.
Sorrell, a seventh-grade student at Northwest Guilford Middle School, suffered the medical emergency during football practice on Sunday, August 30, according to his family.
Young player could not be saved despite treatment
Emergency responders rushed Sorrell to Cone Hospital, where doctors used extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) to support his heart and lungs.
Despite intensive efforts to save him, his family said his condition became too severe and he could not be saved.
The teenager’s death has left his family facing an especially painful loss. Sorrell leaves behind his twin brother and three other siblings.
Family seeks answers after sudden loss
According to a GoFundMe organised for the family, doctors believe an underlying genetic condition may have contributed to Sorrell’s death. However, no specific condition has been publicly identified, and his official cause of death has not been disclosed.
His four siblings are expected to undergo testing as the family seeks to understand what may have led to the sudden medical emergency.
School community comes together to remember Caden
Northwest Guilford Middle School principal CeCe Matson shared a message of grief with students and families following Sorrell’s death.
The school’s Parent Teacher Student Organisation has also created an outdoor memorial where students, families and community members can leave flowers, messages and other tributes.
The school community has urged people to remember Caden and support his family, friends and teammates as they cope with the heartbreaking loss of a young life.
