If someone from 1924 time-traveled to today, they’d think we were living in some kind of sci-fi fever dream. The things we consider normal would leave them absolutely baffled. Here are 12 everyday things that would make zero sense to someone from 100 years ago.
1. Talking via a small rectangle (aka smartphones)
Imagine telling someone in 1924 that we carry tiny glass boxes that let us talk to people across the world, take pictures, and order food without talking to anyone. They’d think we were wizards.
2. Streaming movies & music on demand
Back then, people had to go to the theater or buy records. If you told them you could watch any movie or listen to any song instantly, they’d assume you were incredibly rich—or lying.
3. Selfies & filters
Explaining why we constantly take pictures of ourselves (with dog ears and glowing skin) would be a struggle.
4. People dancing in front of their phones for fun (TikTok)
Try telling someone from 1924 that millions of people watch others dance for 15 seconds on a tiny screen. They’d question everything.
5. Talking to AI assistants (Siri, Alexa, ChatGPT)
They’d probably think we’re summoning demons when we casually ask Alexa to play music or ChatGPT to write an email.
6. Online dating
The idea of swiping left or right to find a partner instead of meeting through family or mutual friends? Completely unthinkable.
7. Flying across the world in hours
In 1924, a flight from London to New York took over 30 hours (with multiple stops). Today, it’s just over six hours.
8. Virtual work & video calls
Explaining Zoom meetings and working from home in pajamas would make zero sense to someone used to typewriters and face-to-face business.
9. Influencers as a full-time job
“Yes, Grandma, people get paid to travel, post selfies, and review products online.” She’d probably cry.
10. Eating food from a microwave
“Wait… you’re telling me you can cook a meal in two minutes?”
11. Buying water in bottles
In 1924, clean water was just… free. Now, we buy it in plastic bottles for more money than soda.
12. Tattoos & piercings being normal
100 years ago, tattoos were mostly for sailors and criminals. Today, your accountant probably has a full sleeve.
