This action was taken on the complaint of Meraj son of Mohammad Islam, resident of Civil Line Jalalpur in Bhadohi district. Meraj told the anti-corruption team that Varanasi Mahila police station in-charge Sumitra Devi had asked for a bribe of ₹20,000 from him. It is alleged that this bribe was demanded in exchange for removing Meraj’s name from a dowry harassment case.

Bribe was demanded in dowry harassment case
According to the complainant Meraj, his younger brother’s wife Rukhsar had filed a dowry harassment case against 13 members of the family and threatened to send them to jail. The responsibility of investigating this case was handed over to Mahila police station in-charge Sumitra Devi. It is alleged that during the investigation, he demanded ₹ 20,000 from Meraj and took the first installment of ₹ 10,000 by calling him to the women’s police station.

Anti corruption team’s trap operation successful
On Meraj’s complaint, the anti-corruption team laid a trap and reached the women’s police station on time. As soon as police station in-charge Sumitra Devi and constable Archana Rai accepted the bribe amount, the team caught both of them on the spot. After this, both the accused were taken into custody and taken to Cantt police station, where a case was registered against them.
