Union centenary celebrations: The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has been 100 years since. The Sangh is celebrating its centenary festival on the occasion of Dussehra on 2 October. Under this, seven big events will be organized across the country from 2 October 2025 to 20 October 2026. On this occasion, on 1 October, PM Modi also issued a memorial postage stamp and a coin of Rs 100, which described the contribution of RSS in the development of the nation. On this occasion, he said, the volunteers of the Sangh are constantly engaged in the service of the country. They are strengthening the society. I congratulate the countrymen for this.

When and why the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh was established?

As a nationalist organization, on 27 September 1925, Keshav Baliram Hedgewar laid the foundation of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh on the day of Dussehra. Its purpose was to promote cultural awareness, discipline, service and social responsibility among the citizens. The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh is a public-rare movement for the rebuilding of the nation. The main emphasis of the Sangh is on patriotism and national character building. Its effort is to communicate the dedication, discipline, restraint, courage and valor to the motherland.

Hedgewar left Congress RSS

Keshav Hedgewar was a follower of Bal Gangadhar Tilak. After Tilak’s death in 1920, Hedgewar, like his other followers, also opposed some decisions taken by Mahatma Gandhi. Especially he was not in favor of Gandhi’s support to the Khilafat movement. Apart from this, cow protection was also not included in the Congress agenda. In such a situation, some followers of Hedgewar and Tilak broke ties with Gandhi. After this, in 1921, Hedgewar was jailed, accusing some of his speeches of treason. However, he was released in July 1922. After this, he felt the need to create an organization that aims to build a nation by furthering the nationalist ideology. Meanwhile, there were anti -Hindu riots in Nagpur in 1923, after which Hedgewar decided to organize Hindu society.

RSS branches running in 39 countries

In the last 100 years, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh has reached the whole world outside India. Its branches are running in 39 countries around the world. RSS currently has 14,35,980 volunteers. The first branch of the Sangh started with a handful of youth in Nagpur. Gradually, branches also started in other provinces. Explain that the organization has adopted the purpose of nation building since its inception. The Sangh has adopted a disciplined work system to continuously move on this path, under which the branches are conducted daily and regularly.

Sarsanghchalak of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh

The most important post in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh is the Sangh chief i.e. Sarsanghchalak. They are selected in the meeting of the Sangh’s “Representative Assembly”. However, the Sangh has its own democratic structure, but the final decision is that of Sarsanghchalak. So far, in the history of the Sangh, it was such that every Sarsanghchalak has been choosing his successor himself. This tradition is still going on in the Sangh.
