Operation is underway and further details are awaited.
Notably, it was the second attack in which Assam Rifles personnel were targeted in the Northeast in less than a week.
On July 6, two personnel of the 40th Battalion of the Assam Rifles lost their lives in a suspected militant ambush that targeted their convoy in Manipur’s Ukhrul district.
The attack led to a prolonged exchange of fire between the security personnels and militants and a massive search operation in the area.
The jawans who lost their lives were Warrant Officer Balwant Singh and Rifleman CM Singh of the 40th Battalion of the Assam Rifles. Both the jawans sustained critical injuries and later succumbed, officials said.
The Assam Rifles has been a crucial part of security operations in the Northeast for decades.
The force is responsible for conducting counter-insurgency operations and helping other forces in maintaining internal security in the state.
Due to its extensive deployment, jawans of the force have frequently been targeted by insurgent groups.
In November 2015, four jawans of Assam Rifles sustained injuries after militants opened fire on a patrolling team in Tengnoupal district. The attack took place near Saibol village during a routine patrol.
The attack came months after Assam Rifles neutralised 10 suspected militants during an encounter in Chandel district.
