Today World Diabetes Day is being celebrated all over the world. According to ICMR, there are more than 10 crore diabetes patients in India. The biggest concern in the case of this disease is that most people are not aware of its symptoms. In many cases, symptoms are detected quite late. By then the disease has already occurred. Why does diabetes occur? How many types are there? People of which age are becoming victims of this? What are its initial symptoms? To know the answers to many such questions, we Professor Dr., HOD of the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism in Delhi AIIMS. Nikhil Tandon Have talked to.

Dr. Nikhil says that it is seen in most of the diabetes patients that they are not aware of the symptoms of the disease. When people get tested for any other disease or on the advice of a doctor, they come to know that they have diabetes.

Dr. Nikhil says that there are two types of diabetes. One is type-1 and the other is type 2. Type-1 is genetic. This is diabetes caused by genes. Which passes from one generation to another. Talking about type-2 diabetes, it occurs due to wrong eating habits and spoiled lifestyle of the people.

Dr Nikhil explains that type 1 diabetes means that your body does not produce enough insulin. Doctors usually diagnose this disease in children and youth, but you can get it at any age. You will need insulin daily. Type 2 diabetes is the most common type, and it means your body can’t use insulin properly. If you are overweight or obese or someone else in your family has diabetes, then your chances of getting this disease increases.

Now young people are becoming victims of type 2 diabetes

Dr. Nikhil says that till a few decades ago, cases of type-2 diabetes were mostly seen in people above 50 years of age, but now its cases are coming in people of 15 to 20 years of age also. The fact that diabetes is happening at such a young age is a cause for concern.

Dr. Tandon says that diabetes is occurring at a young age due to bad eating habits, lack of exercise and spoiled lifestyle. If this disease occurs once, it never ends, it can only be controlled. However, if a person exercises daily, takes care of his diet and does not take mental stress, then his sugar level can easily remain under control.

What are the early symptoms of diabetes?

feeling more hungry than usual

Dr. Nikhil says that your body converts the food you eat into glucose, which your cells use for energy, but to absorb glucose, your cells need insulin. If your body doesn’t make enough or any insulin, or your cells resist the insulin your body makes, glucose can’t get into them and you don’t have energy. This may make you feel more hungry than normal.

frequent urination

An average person usually has to urinate about four to seven times in 24 hours, but people with diabetes may have to urinate more often.. Why? Normally, your body reabsorbs glucose as it passes through the kidneys, but when diabetes raises your blood sugar, your kidneys are unable to get it back up. This causes the body to make more urine, and this requires fluids. As a result, you will have to urinate more often. You may also urinate more.

dry mouth

Because your body uses fluids to make urine, there is less moisture for other functions. You may become dehydrated, and your mouth may feel dry.

itchy skin

Your skin may also feel dry, which may also cause itching.

blurred vision

Changes in fluid levels in your body can cause the lenses of your eyes to swell. Then their shape will change and they will not be able to focus.

Dr. Nikhil says that it is not necessary that all these symptoms are seen in diabetes, some may be seen in some people and some in others, but if you are facing any such problem then you should definitely consult a doctor.

What to do to avoid diabetes?

Dr Nikhil says lifestyle changes can help prevent type 2 diabetes, the most common form of the disease. Prevention is especially important if you are at high risk for type 2 diabetes. For example, if you are overweight or obese, have high cholesterol, or have a family history of diabetes, you may be at higher risk for this disease.

If you have prediabetes, high sugar levels that have not reached diabetes level, lifestyle changes can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes.

Making some changes to your lifestyle now can help you avoid serious health complications related to diabetes in the future. For this it is important to keep the weight under control. Do exercise daily. Take care of your diet. Include fruits, vegetables in your diet and get good sleep.
