World Cup 2023: Mohammad Hafeez congratulates Virat Kohli on 50th ODI hundred days after ‘selfish’ remark

Former Pakistan cricketer Mohammad Hafeez lauded Virat Kohli after the Indian batter scored his 50th ODI hundred. Kohli set the record for the most ODI hundreds, breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s record, in the World Cup 2023 semi-final against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

“Congratulations @imVkohli on world record 50th ODI wow. Keep entertaining cricket fans around the world. Stay healthy & blessed,” Hafeez wrote on X.

Hafeez’s comments came days after he lashed at Kohli for showing ‘selfishness’ in his knock against South Africa at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Hafeez had said that Kohli should have played shots instead of going for singles when he was nearing his hundred.

“I saw a sense of selfishness in Virat Kohli’s batting and this happened for the third time in this World Cup. In the 49th over, he was looking to take a single to reach his own hundred and he didn’t put the team first. Rohit Sharma could have played selfish cricket too, but he didn’t because he is playing for Team India and not for himself,” Hafeez was quoted as saying.

After Hafeez made the remarks, former cricketers Venkatesh Prasad and Michael Vaughan trolled and slammed the retired all-rounder.

As far as Kohli is concerned, he got to his hundred off 106 balls. After reaching the three-figure score, he bowed down to Sachin Tendulkar, who has present at the venue. Anushka Sharma, Kohli’s wife, gave her husband flying kisses from the stands.

Kohli, who turned 35 years in the match against the Proteas, also broke Sachin’s record of most runs in a single edition of the World Cup.
