H1B Visa Reform: A few days after Donald Trump supported the H-1B program, the Republican leader announced a bill to abolish it completely. They allege that big tech and hospitals are misusing this visa.
H-1B Ban Bill: A few days after US President Donald Trump’s statement supporting H-1B visa, a big controversy has started in America. Republican leader Marjorie Taylor Greene has announced to introduce a bill to abolish H-1B visas. This step can directly impact millions of Indian professionals who work in America through this visa and get access to green cards. In such a situation, the question arises whether the H-1B program will really end? Who will suffer how much loss from this? If so, then why did Trump support it?
What did the American leader say about H-1B?
Marjorie Taylor Greene alleges that ‘H-1B is taking away the place of American workers.’ He claims that American companies like big tech, AI companies, hospitals and manufacturing sectors are taking advantage of this visa program. The American people are being harmed by this. Greene says she only serves Americans and will prioritize ‘Americans first’ in the workforce. With this thinking in mind, she has brought a bill which is in the direction of ending the H-1B program completely.
What’s in the H-1B bill?
According to Green, his bill would completely eliminate the H-1B program. American workers will be given priority in every sector like tech, healthcare, engineering, manufacturing. Only Rs 10,000 medical visa will be exempted. This exemption will also be phased out in 10 years. Meaning no H-1B after 0 years. Green says this will give America time to prepare a new pipeline of doctors and medical workers.
Who is most at risk from ending H-1B visa?
This will have a direct impact on Indians. In fact, more than 70% of those working on H-1B visas are Indians. Companies like Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta bring maximum talent from India. H-1B is the biggest path to America for millions of Indian engineers, doctors and tech workers. Getting a green card also starts with H-1B. If H-1B ends, the door to US jobs will be almost closed for Indians.
What did Trump say about H-1B visa?
A few days before this draft bill, President Donald Trump had openly defended H-1B. In a Fox News interview, he said that America is lacking in some high-tech and defense skills. In such a situation, talent will have to be brought from outside. It is not possible to employ unemployed Americans in missile factories. This statement of Trump was a big indication that tech sectors need foreign skilled workers.
Could H-1B really be shut down?
Green’s bill is just a proposal right now. But the danger cannot be underestimated, because public pressure regarding job security is increasing in America, a large part of the Republican Party considers H-1B as an outsourcing tool.
