Watch: Virat Kohli yells at fielders after Rohit spills a tough catch in Pune

The Indian team had a tough outing with both bat and ball on Day 2 of the 2nd Test against New Zealand at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.

As the bowlers struggled to make breakthroughs, Ravindra Jadeja created a small opportunity in the 37th over of New Zealand’s second innings. He found the edge of New Zealand captain Tom Latham, who was batting on 68 at the time. Fielding in the slips, Indian captain Rohit Sharma dived to his right but couldn’t reach the ball as it zipped past him. Jadeja had bowled a good-length delivery outside off, and Latham played inside the line, resulting in a fine edge. However, it was a difficult, low chance, leaving Rohit with no realistic opportunity to grab it. The ball raced to the boundary, adding to India’s frustration.

Virat Kohli, visibly upset with the fielders, was seen yelling in frustration as they failed to prevent the four. With New Zealand steadily piling on the runs, moments like these demanded greater alertness from the fielders. New Zealand remain firmly in control of the Test, holding all the aces with a 301-run lead and five wickets in hand. They look well on course to seal the series in Pune. It was a dream day for the visitors, highlighted by a brilliant spell from Mitchell Santner, who bowled India out for just 156, giving his side a hefty first-innings lead of over 100 runs.

Their batters followed up with an aggressive approach, stretching the lead beyond 300-a daunting margin, even with the pitch slowing down slightly. And New Zealand aren’t done yet. For India, Washington Sundar has been the lone bright spot with the ball, claiming four of the five wickets to fall. He has had a standout Test, but unfortunately, his efforts haven’t been matched by his teammates.

The Indian batters struggled to read Santner, who was exceptional in varying his pace, angles, and trajectory. With the pitch offering just enough assistance, Santner made the most of it, delivering a masterclass after a tough tour of Sri Lanka. In contrast, India’s two lead spinners have been disappointing, failing to create pressure or match Santner’s consistency. As things stand, India faces a steep uphill battle to turn the game around.
