Vikram Samvat: The coming year of the Hindu calendar i.e. Vikram Samvat 2083 will be a little different because this year will have 13 months and not 12. The reason behind why this would happen is also very special.

Adhik Maas 2026: Like English, there is also a Hindi calendar which is called Vikram Samvat. Currently Vikram Samvat 2082 is going on which will last till 18 March 2026. After this Vikram Samvat 2083 will start. The special thing is that this Hindu year will not be of 12 but 13 months. This may sound a bit strange but it is true. 13th month will be more month

According to Astrologer of Ujjain Pt. Praveen Dwivedi, due to extra month of Jyeshtha in Vikram Samvat 2083, this year will not be of 12 but 13 months. Adhik Maas i.e. this year the month of Jyeshtha will not be of 30 but of 60 days. The Adhik month of Jyeshtha will be from 17th May to 15th June 2026. Adhik Maas is also called Purushottam Maas. Its special importance has been mentioned in religious texts. In this month, there is a ban on auspicious functions like marriage, housewarming etc.

Why are there more periods?

According to Vedic astrology, there are two types of calendars prevalent in Hindu religion, solar and lunar. The solar calendar is based on the movement of the Sun and the lunar calendar is based on the movement of the Moon. The lunar year is of 355 days and the solar year is of 365 days. In this way, every year there is a difference of 10 days between the lunar and solar years. This difference becomes 30 days in three years. To eliminate this difference, our scholars made arrangements for Adhik Maas so that all fasts and festivals could be observed in specific seasons.

Why is more mass necessary?

In Hinduism, almost all the fasts and festivals are observed keeping in mind the dates of the moon. The Moon revolves around the Earth in about 29 days, which is called a lunar month. When the Moon makes 12 revolutions around the Earth, it is called a lunar year which is approximately 355 days. Whereas the solar year is of 365 years. If there is no arrangement for more months, then Hindu fasts and festivals will be postponed by 10 days every year, due to which Diwali will be celebrated in rainy season and Holi will be celebrated in winter season. To avoid such a situation, our scholars have made arrangements for more months.
