Tooth pain which comes suddenly can often make it difficult to focus on anything other than ache. There could be many causes behind sudden tooth pain, that range from dental concerns to underlying health conditions.
There are home remedies that can help to deal with unbearable pain. In this post, we will look at the most prevalent reasons for acute tooth pain and examine effective natural solutions for pain relief.
In an interaction with Only My Health, Dr Ganesh Chaudhary, Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS), PHC, Darbhanga, Bihar, shared some natural remedies to deal with the tooth pain.
Common Causes of Sudden Tooth Pain
Tooth Decay
Poor oral hygiene practices can lead to cavities. When the enamel on the tooth surface breaks down, it gets exposed to the sensitive inner layers of the tooth, causing sudden and sharp pain.
According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, tooth decay can result in a cavity, which is a small hole in a tooth. If untreated, dental decay can lead to discomfort, infection, and even tooth loss.
Gum Disease
Gingivitis is a gum condition that can be painful. Gum inflammation and infection can cause pain, especially while chewing or applying pressure to the affected area.
Dental Abscess
“A dental abscess is a collection of pus that forms in the teeth or gums. This can result from untreated cavities or gum infections, leading to severe, intense pain. An abscess requires immediate dental attention to prevent further complications,” said Dr Chaudhary.
Tooth Sensitivity
Tooth sensitivity occurs when the protective enamel on the teeth wears down, exposing the dentin underneath. This can lead to pain, especially when consuming hot, cold, sweet, or acidic foods and beverages.
Cracked or Fractured Tooth
A cracked or fractured tooth can cause sudden and intense pain, particularly when biting down. Trauma, teeth grinding, or biting on hard objects can contribute to tooth fractures.
Natural Remedies for Tooth Pain
Saltwater Rinse
Gargling with a warm saltwater solution can help reduce inflammation and kill bacteria in the mouth. Mix a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and rinse your mouth several times a day.
Cloves or Clove Oil
Cloves have natural analgesic and antibacterial properties. Applying clove oil to the affected tooth or chewing on a whole clove can provide temporary relief from tooth pain.
Peppermint Tea
Peppermint tea has mild numbing properties that can help decrease the tooth pain. Brew a cup of peppermint tea, allow it to cool, and use it as a mouthwash.
Garlic
“Garlic has antimicrobial properties that can help fight oral infections. Crush a garlic clove to form a paste and apply it to the affected area, or chew on a garlic clove for its natural antibacterial benefits,” Dr Chaudhary suggested.
Ice Pack
“Applying an ice pack to the affected side of the face can help reduce inflammation and numb the area,” Dr Chaudhary said. , Applying it only provides a temporary relief from tooth pain.
Turmeric
Turmeric’s anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties can be beneficial for tooth pain. Create a paste by mixing turmeric powder with water and apply it directly to the affected tooth.
Although natural therapies can provide temporary relief from acute tooth pain, the root cause of the problem must be addressed. Regular dental check-ups, basic oral hygiene practices, and seeking expert dental care when necessary are critical for preventing and managing long-term tooth discomfort. If the pain continues or worsens, it is important to see a dentist for an accurate diagnosis and treatment.
