New Delhi: India is home to around 101 million people living with Diabetes condition. On the other hand, 136 million people are living in pre-diabetes stages, according to a study conducted by the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation and Indian Council of Medical Research.
The condition impacts various parts of our body and lead to other severe health problems. Among them one is Diabetic foot complications which is quite common.
Dr Harish Kumar, Clinical Professor and Head, of the Department of Endocrinology and Diabetes, Amrita Hospital, Kochi told News9, “The global diabetes epidemic, impacting millions, especially in high-prevalence countries like India. Amidst the alarming statistics, the focus on foot health takes centre stage as a critical concern.”
“Diabetes, affecting 15-20 per cent of adults worldwide, brings forth complications that significantly increase the risk of foot ulcers. The staggering numbers reveal that around 15 per cent of individuals with diabetes are susceptible to diabetic foot problems, emphasizing the magnitude of the issue,” added Dr Kumar.
Uncontrolled Diabetes: The Underlying Culprit
Accoridng to Dr Kumar, uncontrolled diabetes disrupts nerve function and blood supply to the feet, creating a high-risk diabetic foot. Proper management of diabetes is key to mitigating complications. However, when left unchecked, it progresses into neuropathy, initially causing sensations like burning and tingling, eventually leading to insensate feet.
Challenges in Neuropathy and Wound Healing
Insensate feet pose challenges as small wounds may go unnoticed, and once ulcers form, compromised blood supply hampers healing. The lack of sensation complicates matters, making early intervention crucial.
Preventive Measures for Diabetic Patients
Diabetic patients, particularly those with neuropathy, must adopt preventive measures. Specialized diabetic footwear for both indoor and outdoor use is vital. Caution extends to various environments, emphasizing the need for meticulous attention.
Daily Foot Examination and Timely Intervention
A daily foot examination becomes essential for those at higher risk. The loss of sensation requires proactive measures, and seeking prompt medical attention is vital to prevent complications. Daily cleanliness and moisturization are imperative.
The Footcare Mantra: Prevention and Timely Intervention
Preventing diabetic foot complications mirrors caring for one’s face. Daily inspection, cleanliness, and protective measures with appropriate footwear are paramount. Simple precautions significantly mitigate the risk of foot problems, and early medical attention is vital for effective wound healing and complication prevention. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, vacuum therapy, topical ointments, and growth factors underscore the diverse techniques available, reinforcing that prevention remains the cornerstone of diabetic foot care.
