US President Donald Trump has signalled that his administration may impose new tariffs on key agricultural imports, including Canadian fertiliser and Indian rice, after American farmers complained that cheap, subsidised foreign goods are flooding the US market. Trump made the remarks during a White House roundtable where he unveiled a $12 billion support package for US farmers struggling with low prices and global competition.
At the meeting, several farmers urged the President to crack down on what they described as unfairly priced rice entering the United States. They argued that heavily subsidised imports were depressing domestic prices and harming US producers. Responding to the concerns, Trump said foreign competitors were cheating and warned that tariffs could soon be expanded to target these imports. He also suggested that fertiliser arriving from Canada might face steep new duties to boost domestic manufacturing.
