How did it get its name?
The story behind the name of Majnu Ka Tila is related to Sikhism. It is believed that this was the reign of Sikandar Lodi in the 15th century. Lodi was a Sufi saint, who was a resident of Iran. At that time the people here called the Sufi fakir Majnu. Lodi used to live on a mound in this area. This place was near the Yamuna river and that person used to help people cross the river for free in the name of God.
In such a situation, Guru Nanak came here during the period of Lodi. In such a situation, when Guru Nanak saw Majnu’s spirit of service, he became very happy and blessed him. After this, Guru Nanak built a mound here, which came to be known as Majnu Ka Tila. Later in 1783, Sikh military leader Baghel Singh built Majnu Ka Tila Gurudwara, because Guru Nanak Dev Ji stayed here.
