Indian women’s cricket team is set to face South Africa on Sunday to claim their maiden ICC Women’s World Cup title.
The journey till here was not easy, as they faced three consecutive losses starting with the three-wicket defeat to their final opponent.
However, the team pulled their way back into the semi finals and will be playing today to grab the championship title.
While India are playing the Women’s World Cup final for the third time, South Africa will be doing it for the first time.
This time, the winning team will not only grab the grand trophy, but also will get the highest winning amount ever awarded to Cricket World Cup team, be it men or women.
In September this year, ICC had announced a huge increase in the prize money for the ICC Women’s World Cup, that is $13.88 million (approx Rs 123 crore), which implies a 297 per cent increase from the last edition and more than the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, which was $10 million.
The runner-up, on the other hand, will get half of the winning amount.
Moreover, BCCI has also announced an award of Rs 125 crore to Harmanpreet Kaur-led Indian women’s cricket team if they win the ICC Women’s World Cup final against South Africa.
Meanwhile, as per a report by PTI, it is believed that BCCI will be advocating the ‘equal pay for men and women’ policy for both the cricket teams representing India. “The BCCI supports equal pay for men and women and hence, there are a lot of discussions that if our girls win the World Cup, the reward won’t be anything less compared to men’s global triumph. But it isn’t nice to make an announcement before they win the Cup,” a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
The the Indian men’s cricket team was rewarded with a whopping Rs 125 crore for their performance in the men’s T20 World Cup, 2024, where they defeated South Africa in the final.
