Indian automobile manufacturers have registered astounding sales growth in 2023. Indian manufacturers like Tata, Mahindra, Hyundai, Toyota, Maruti Suzuki and many others have registered a record growth in October sales.
This evident increase in sales has shown that India’s automobile industry is rising back again to pre-COVID times or is probably doing better than that. The Indian automobile industry has also witnessed a remarkable increase in the sales of EVs. However, despite the increasing demand for electric cars in the country, conventional petrol and diesel engine cars were also sold in large numbers in 2023. Here’s a look at the most sold vehicles in their respective fuel-type category.
Maruti Suzuki Swift – Petrol
Maruti Suzuki Swift was the best selling vehicle in the petrol fuel-type category. Maruti Suzuki retailed a total 1,38,571 units of the petrol variant of the Swift hatchback that contributed to a total of 7 per cent of all petrol engine car sales. The Swift was also available with a diesel engine previously but that has now been discontinued since the BS6 regulations were put in place in 2020. The Swift is also available with a CNG fuel-type option.
Mahindra Bolero – Diesel
Mahindra Bolero is among the oldest SUVs in the country and it is still dominating the diesel fuel-type category with its impressive sales figure in January to September 2023. A total of 81,334 units of the Mahindra Bolero were sold in the first three quarters of the year that accounted for a 16 per cent share in all the diesel cars sold in the country.
Maruti Suzuki WagonR – CNG
Maruti Suzuki owns the CNG cars segment in the country as it offers CNG variants on almost all of its cars. Apart from the Swift dominating the petrol fuel-type category, the Maruti Suzuki Swift has successfully captured the CNG segment of India. The manufacturer sold a total of 66,406 units of the CNG powered WagonR in India that accounted for a 17 per cent share in the total car sales in the CNG fuel-type category.
Tata Tiago EV – Electric
Tata launched the EV version of the Tiago hatchback in India in 2022. In just one year of its launch, the Tiago EV has garnered strong demand and captured the majority of the EV segment in India. A total of 29,237 units of the Tata Tiago EV were sold in the first three quarters of 2023 which accounted for a massive 41 per cent of the EV segment.
Toyota Innova Hycross – Strong Hybrid
Toyota Innova Hycross is the best selling car in the hybrid fuel-type category of cars in India. The Innova Hycross is among the most expensive hybrid vehicles sold in India but it has still managed to dominate the hybrid segment in the country owing to its good performance and other vehicle aspects. Toyota Innova Hycross sales accounted for a total of 44 per cent sales figure in the strong hybrid segment of India.
