Long wait for Congress’ return
Sultanganj assembly seat was dominated by Congress till 1985. But since then Congress had to face continuous defeats. From 1990 to 2005, candidates of Janata Dal and Samata Party kept winning, while from 2010 to 2020, JDU maintained its strong hold. Congress is still waiting for his comeback.
2010 elections: JDU’s return
In the 2010 elections, JDU’s Subodh Rai defeated RJD’s Ram Avtar Mandal. Subodh Rai got 34,652 votes, while Ram Avtar Mandal got 29,807 votes. JDU won by a margin of about 4,800 votes and strengthened their hold on this seat.
2015 elections: Subodh Rai’s second victory
In 2015, JDU’s Subodh Rai won again. He defeated Himanshu Prasad of BLSP. Subodh Rai got 63,345 votes while Himanshu Prasad got 49,312 votes. This time the difference was more than 14,000 votes and JDU secured victory for the second consecutive time.
2020 elections: Rise of Lalit Narayan Mandal
JDU made Lalit Narayan Mandal its candidate in the 2020 elections. He won by defeating Lalan Kumar of Congress. Lalit Narayan Mandal got 72,823 votes while Lalan Kumar got 61,258 votes. In this way JDU won by a margin of more than 10,000 votes. Whereas, LJP’s Neelam Devi stood third and got 10,222 votes.
