Size of Shivling: No bigger than the tip of the thumb
Big size Shivling should never be installed in the house.

Reason: It is believed that it is difficult to control the energy of the Big Shivalinga and follow the strict rules of its regular worship at home, whereas it is possible in the temple.
Uttam Shivalinga: Shivling made of mercury or Narmada river stone is considered best for the home.
Direction and location: Install in north-east corner
The direction and place of installing Shivalinga matters a lot.
Direction: Shivling should always be installed in the north-eastern corner (Ishaan Kon) of the house. This direction is considered most auspicious for worship.
water bearer (Abhishek water issuing place): The face of the Jaladhari or Jaladhari of Shivling should always be towards the north. Keep in mind, the Jaladhari should never be crossed.
Sanctity of place: Shivling should be kept only at the place of worship. Do not keep it in the bedroom, kitchen or any other unholy place in the house.
Don’t make these mistakes even by mistake?
More than one Shivalinga: Not more than one Shivling should be installed in the worship place of the house.
Dignity of life: The consecration of Shivalinga installed in the house should not be done. This is done for temples and big rituals. Shivalinga should be worshiped at home only without sanctity of life.
Broken Shivalinga: A fragmented or broken Shivalinga should never be kept in the house. Immediately immerse it in running water.
Turmeric or vermillion: Do not apply turmeric or vermillion tilak on Shivling even by mistake. Only sandalwood tilak should be offered to them.
