Rangers secured a significant victory in their Europa League campaign by defeating Nice 4-1. Hamza Igamane was instrumental, scoring twice.
This win elevated Rangers to ninth place in the 36-team league standings, just shy of automatic qualification due to goal difference, with three matches left to play.
The match began with a tense VAR review involving three incidents. However, Rangers took the lead in the 35th minute when Vaclav Cerny’s shot deflected off Pablo Rosario. Rosario was again involved as Dujon Sterling’s pass went over his head, allowing Mohamed Diomande to score with a skilful lob over Marcin Bulka.
In first-half stoppage time, Mohamed Abdelmonem’s poor back pass was intercepted by Igamane, who rounded Bulka to score. Shortly after halftime, Igamane intercepted another Rosario pass and scored his second goal, placing the ball into the bottom left corner.
Nice’s defensive issues persisted throughout the match. Despite Badredine Bouanani’s impressive free-kick reducing the deficit seven minutes from time, Rangers had opportunities to extend their lead further. Substitute Cyriel Dessers missed a close-range chance that could have added a fifth goal for Rangers.
Igamane’s Impact and Historical Achievement
Igamane’s performance was outstanding despite top scorer Dessers starting on the bench. He not only scored twice but also assisted once and had more touches in the opposition box than any teammate. His expected goals (xG) of 0.53 was second only to Dessers’ 0.74 for Rangers.
This match marked Igamane as the youngest Rangers player at 22 years and 26 days to score two goals in an away major European game since David McPherson did so against Valletta in Malta at age 19 in September 1983.
Historical Context of Rangers’ Performance
This victory was significant as it was only the eighth time Rangers scored four or more goals in an away major European game. The last occurrence was during their 4-2 win against Borussia Dortmund in February 2022.
The result not only boosts their standing but also highlights their attacking depth and potential for further success in upcoming matches.
