If you’re planning to study in Quebec, here’s something important you need to know. From January 1, 2026, international students will need to provide much higher financial proof to get or renew a study permit. The required amount will increase sharply, in some cases more than triple the current level.
New Financial Requirements
The new rule applies to both first-time applicants and students who are renewing their study permits. The financial proof must cover living expenses only. Tuition and travel costs remain separate.
Here’s a quick look at how the amounts compare before and after January 2026:
| Category | Until Dec 31, 2025 | From Jan 1, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| One person under 18 | CAD 7,756 | CAD 24,617 |
| One person 18 or older | CAD 15,508 | CAD 24,617 |
| Two adults | CAD 22,745 | CAD 34,814 |
| Two adults + one child | CAD 25,479 | CAD 42,638 |
| Two adults + two children | CAD 27,499 | CAD 49,234 |
What this means in simple terms: a single student will now need to prove they have at least CAD 24,617 available for living costs.
However, students coming to Canada along with their family members must need to show higher amounts depending on the number of dependents.
What Expenses Are Covered?
To study in Quebec (Canada), you must show that you can afford:
- Tuition fees
- Travel expenses
- Basic living costs such as food, housing and transportation
In addition to these, you also need to show that you can cover health and hospital insurance for yourself and any accompanying family members.
You do not need proof of insurance if you already have valid Quebec medical insurance or if your home country has a social security agreement with Quebec.
Who Needs to Meet the New Financial Rule?
Everyone. This includes:
- New international students applying for a first study permit
- Current international students applying to extend their study permit
You must prove your financial capacity twice in the study permit process:
- At the provincial stage (Quebec)
- At the federal stage (Canada IRCC)
What Documents Can Be Used As Proof?
Any evidence that clearly shows you have access to the required money, such as:
- Bank statements or bank letters
- Proof of student loan
- Scholarship confirmation letters
- Financial support letters from sponsors
