Petrol also boosted the economy, consumption increased so much during the festive season

demand for petrol

Last month October was the month of festivals, from Diwali to Chhath festivals took place in this month, hence the month was good in terms of festivals. In the same way, this month has been good for the economy. Because a rise of about 4.57 percent was seen in the Indian stock market. In October, investors earned about Rs 19 lakh crore from the stock market. GSAT collection has also increased and due to increased traffic during the festive season, petrol consumption has also increased.

Petrol sales in India reached a five-month high in October due to increased travel during festivals. But during this period diesel consumption remained stable, which is contrary to the general trend. This information has been obtained from preliminary data of the oil industry. Due to increase in demand for fuel with the start of the festive season, petrol consumption in October increased by 7 percent to 36.5 lakh tonnes as compared to last year. Sales of petrol in September were 34 lakh tonnes. Sales of diesel, the most used fuel in the country, declined slightly in October to 76 lakh tonnes, whereas it was 76.4 lakh tonnes in the same month last year.

Connection of consumption to rain

In earlier years, diesel consumption would reduce when rains started in June, as pumps to water the fields would run less and vehicular movement would also be affected. But sales increase from October, as rains reduce and truck movement increases due to festivals. But this year this trend reversed and instead of increasing consumption in October, a slight decline was seen.

According to the monthly report of the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell of the Petroleum Ministry, petrol consumption was 16.3 percent higher than in October 2023, while diesel sales this year were less than 76.3 lakh tonnes in October 2023. Aviation fuel (ATF) consumption is continuously improving and in October it increased by 1.6 percent to 7,69,000 tonnes. This is 11.11 percent more than October 2023. Since 2019, ATF consumption has increased at the rate of 1.65 percent per year.

LPG demand

Sales of cooking gas (LPG) increased by 5.4 percent to about 30 lakh tonnes in October, as the need for cooking in homes is continuously increasing. A major reason for this increase is domestic demand. India added 25 lakh new houses to the PM Ujjwala scheme, due to which the number of families covered under the scheme increased from 10.33 crore to 10.58 crore.

Demand for fuel has increased so much

In the first seven months of the current financial year starting from April 2025, petrol consumption increased by 6.8 percent to 24.8 million tonnes. Diesel sales increased by 2.45 percent to 5.33 crore tonnes. ATF consumption has increased by 1 percent to 52 lakh tonnes and LPG demand has increased by 7.2 percent to 1.97 crore tonnes.
