In the last five years, there has been a tremendous increase in the number of women taxpayers in the country. According to statistics, this increase has been seen by 25 percent. In the assessment year 2019-20, where 1.83 crore women taxpayers were seen. Its number has increased by 25 percent to 2.29 crore in the assessment year 2023-24. The special thing is that the highest share in this has been seen from the women taxpayers of Maharashtra. Assessment year is a 12 month period from 1 April to 31 March. Increase in the number of women tax filers in Maharashtra
Finance Ministry data shows that Maharashtra has seen the highest increase of 6.88 lakh in female ITR filers – from 29.94 lakh in AY 2019-20 to 36.83 lakh in AY 2023-24. In terms of percentage growth, Maharashtra recorded a growth of 23 per cent, lower than the national average. Uttar Pradesh was next in the queue where 4.62 lakh women joined the ITR web. The state recorded a growth of 29 per cent – from 15.81 lakh in AY 2019-20 to 20.43 lakh in AY 2023-24. Gujarat is the third state with 24 percent growth i.e. 4.41 lakh female ITR filers.
In AY 2023-24, Maharashtra (36.83 lakh) was the state with the highest number of women ITR filings, followed by Gujarat (22.50 lakh) and Uttar Pradesh (20.43 lakh). The bottom three regions were Ladakh (205), Lakshadweep (1,125) and Mizoram (2,090). Even in the assessment year 2019-20, these states were in the top three positions of Maharashtra (29.94 lakh), Gujarat (18.08 lakh) and Uttar Pradesh (15.81 lakh). Ladakh (30), Mizoram (1,068) and Lakshadweep (1,108) were seen at the top of the list of states with the lowest number.

Ladakh has seen the biggest jump in percentage terms in the number of women ITR filers. There were only 30 women ITR filers in the Union Territory in Assessment Year 2019-20, which increased almost seven times to 205 in AY 2023-24. The number of women ITR filers in the UT peaked in AY 2021-22, when the number was 269. In Mizoram, the number of women ITR filers doubled between AY 2019-20 (1,068) and AY 2023-24 (2,090).
The steady increase in the number of individuals filing income tax returns reflects the growing tax base and better tax compliance. Chandigarh is the only part of India where the number of women ITR filers has fallen during the said period. It has decreased from 89,873 in assessment year 2019-20 to 88,115 in assessment year 2023-24.
