New Delhi: Jannik Sinner didn’t produce his flashiest tennis on Friday in Turin but he didn’t need to. What mattered was control, composure and finding the right answers when the match tightened. He delivered the performance of the night as he beat Ben Shelton 6-3, 7-6 (3) to wrap up the round-robin stage with a 3-0 record at the Nitto ATP Finals. The defending champion has now stretched his indoor winning streak to 29 matches which in itself is a defining threads of his season.
Shelton entered the match with nothing to lose as he already got eliminated from the tournament after his earlier defeats yet he still turned the match into a proper contest. On the other hand, Sinner had the burden of expectations from a home crowd that has taken him in as its own. His serve wasn’t to the mark and his rhythm also wavered in patches but he stayed calm through the turbulence and found enough big points to keep Shelton at arm’s length.

After the match, the US Open champion admitted that this wasn’t one of his “cleanest” outings, but when he needed a first serve or a controlled forehand, he found it more often than not. The match held a strange rhythm as it had dominance from Sinner followed by bursts of raw power from Shelton. The American had to belt down several unbreakable serves as he kept the second set competitive until the tie-break.
Shelton even saved a match point at 4-5 with a booming serve that brought the crowd to their feet, but once the contest drifted into the tie-break, the Italian’s sharpness returned. He played with more margin, more clarity and squeezed errors out of the American to seal the match in straight sets.
What next?
Sinner has topped the Bjorg Borg Group and will now next play Alex de Minaur in the semifinal. The American booked a spot in the last four after having a rough loss earlier this week. Sinner admitted the resilience American possesses but he also acknowledged the danger that comes with facing someone who has little pressure.
On the other side of the draw is Carlos Alcaraz who is waiting for the winner of Alexander Zverev vs Felix Auger-Aliassime. That sets up the possibility of a Sinner-Alcaraz final, a matchup that has quickly become one of the most compelling rivalries in men’s tennis.
