income tax refund
If you too had filed your Income Tax Return (ITR) before the deadline of 16th September, then obviously your eyes would now be fixed on your bank account. Every taxpayer is eagerly waiting for the message which contains information about ‘refund credit’. However, even after the ITR filing season is over, there are a large number of taxpayers whose refund has not yet been processed or has not reached their account. If you are also standing in the same queue, then just waiting will not work. You have to understand why there is a delay.
When will the refund money be credited to the account?
usually return file The department issues the refund within a few weeks of the application and its verification. Many of those who had filed their returns by September 16 have received refunds. But, if you still have to wait, then first of all it is important to check the status of your filing.
It is important to note that for those who could not file the return on time, the last date for filing belated return is December 31, but for this they will have to pay penalty. For those who have already filed, the delay in refund may be due to technical glitches or data mismatch.
The real reason for refund getting stuck
Often, the reason behind non-receipt of refund is not the delay of the department, but some small or big mistakes made by us during filing.
- Incorrect bank details: The most common mistake is to enter the wrong bank account number or IFSC code. If even one digit is deviated from, the money will not be transferred.
- Difference in name: If there is any difference (spelling mismatch) between the name written on your PAN card and the name recorded in the bank account, then the system may stop the refund.
- Lack of pre-validation: ITR refund is credited only to the bank account which is ‘pre-validated’ on the income tax portal. If your account is not valid, money will not come.
- No PAN-Aadhaar linking: The government has made it mandatory to link PAN with Aadhaar. If this link is not there, there may be a hindrance in processing your return.
- Incorrect claim: If you have made a mistake in tax calculation or have made deduction claims that are not valid, the department may withhold your refund and investigate.
Check your refund status in minutes sitting at home
Instead of worrying, you can check yourself online where your file is stuck. The process is very simple:
- First of all go to the official website of Income Tax Department.
- Login there with the help of your user ID (PAN number) and password.
- After login, go to ‘e-file’ tab and select the option ‘Income Tax Return’.
- Here you have to click on ‘View Filed Return’.
- On the next screen you will see the current status of your refund.
Refund Re-Issue Method
If checking the status shows that a refund was issued but failed, or it has been more than a month since the filing and there is no update, then you can file a complaint. Many times the department also asks you to submit a request for ‘Refund Re-issue’.
How to apply for a refund again: If you need to re-issue a refund, login to the portal and go to the ‘My Account’ section. Select the option of ‘Refund Re-issue’ there. After this click on ‘Refund Reissue Request’. Here you will have to fill your PAN number, assessment year and other important information. Finally, e-verify and submit your request. By doing this, the department will re-examine your case and start the process of sending the amount to your account as soon as possible.
