It was a used wicket: Williamson gives his verdict on pitch swap controversy during WC semifinal

The Indian cricket team performed superbly in the semi-finals of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 in Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. After winning the toss and deciding to bat, Rohit Sharma’s team scored an impressive 397-4 in 50 overs.

The Black Caps were bowled out for 327 runs in 48.5 overs, giving Team India a comfortable 70-run victory. The decisive batting of Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer, together with the bowling of Mohammed Shami, was crucial to the victory.

3 things you need to know

  • Virat Kohli scored his 50th ODI century and scored 117 runs in 113 balls against NZ
  • Shreyas Iyer scored 105 runs for 70 balls
  • Mohammed Shami took 7 wickets and was named the Player of the Match against NZ

Kane Williamson made a huge statement on the pitch dispute

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was accused of making last-minute changes to the pitch before the Cricket World Cup 2023 semi-final that skewed the playing field in India’s favour. In the postgame press conference, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson played down the significance of the notion of a tactical change. Williamson noted the wicket had been used before but had no issues with it. Kane Williamson said:

“No, I mean, yeah it was a used wicket, but a pretty good surface really, as we saw. I mean, they got plenty out of it in the first half of the match. And conditions, I guess they change as they go under lights and things, and that’s what we’ve seen throughout this competition. That’s fine, that’s what you expect and they played really well. So yeah, I mean it’s disappointing to get to this stage and not go further, but also at the same time you sort of reflect on the seven weeks rather than a couple of small moments and we lost to a better side,”

Kane Williamson said that Team India is the best cricket team in the world

Williamson also gave India high marks, calling them “the best team in the world,” a statement of confidence as they headed into the final. He added:

“They’re the best team in the world and they’re all playing their best cricket, so that’s tough. And I think we see in cricket – often it’s surrounded with failure and how you deal with it. The way they’ve played throughout this tournament has been incredible. They haven’t missed a beat really and to come into a semi-final, you go through your round-robin and you try and get to the stage and it starts again but the way they came out and played, yeah, shows the mindset that they have and the space that they’re in and I’ve got no doubt they’ll go into that next match full of confidence,”

The Indian Cricket team will now be seen in action on Sunday against the winner of the 2nd semifinal match between Australia and South Africa. The Cricket World Cup 2023 final will be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. India is just one win away from creating history and are likely to lift the trophy on home soil.
