This situation is when Shia-Sunni differences between the two countries are also seen from time to time. Not only this, business and public movement has also been happening between the two countries for thousands of years.
Balanced but vigilant policy regarding Taliban
It is a matter of the year 2001. A new government was formed after the Taliban collapse in Afghanistan. Iran then supported the government of Afghanistan. Then in the year 2021, the Taliban returned to Afghanistan once again. When the rule of the country went into the hands of the Taliban, Iran adopted a policy of vigilance. Although Iran never fully recognizes the Taliban, but does not stop talking to him. Sometimes Iran is seen supporting the Taliban to maintain strategic balance against America.
Apart from this, Iran is also threatened by terrorist organizations like ISIS-K in Afghanistan. Therefore, he sometimes provides strategic support to the Taliban, so that the neighboring country remains stable in Afghanistan and Iran is also stable.
Business relations intact
Afghanistan is exported to petroleum products, electricity and food items etc. from Iran. Then Iran’s desire port is actually an alternative way for Afghanistan to reach the sea. Especially when Pakistan has to be bypassed, this is a suitable way. In such a situation, despite the millions of disputes between the two countries, there is a business relationship.
Fight with water
There is a dispute over water in Iran and Afghanistan. This dispute has been going on for a long time over the water sharing of the Helmand river. Under an agreement in 1973, Afghanistan has to give 820 million cubic meters to Iran every year. Despite this, Iran complains that Afghanistan does not give it enough water. At the same time, Afghanistan says that he uses water according to his rights. In the year 2023, this issue of water was very hot.
Actually, two big rivers from Afghanistan go to Iran. These are helmand and losing rude. Helmand river is the lifeline for Hamun, the lake area on the border of both countries. Due to climate change, the Helmand River is being reduced to this region, which is negatively impacting life in Sistan and Balochistan province of Iran.
Afghan refugee big problem
Afghan refugees have become a major problem in Iran. It is said that more than 30 lakh Afghan refugees live there. Many of them are illegally settled. That is why Iran continues to send them back several times. Now after the war with Israel, Iran has accelerated the process of returning refugees, as it believes that some of these may also be involved in espionage. He has also arrested many citizens of Afghanistan on charges of espionage.
Iran says that Afghani increases chaos in it. In such a situation, it has imposed a strong ban on the coming to Iran of the citizens of Afghanistan. Visa policy has been tightened for Afghan citizens. Now only the health problems, relatives present in Iran and employment in the Iranian company will get Iran’s visa only after getting employment. Due to this policy, Iran has expelled five lakh Afghans from here in just 16 days. This action has been taken between 24 June to July 9 (2025). Earlier in March 2025, Iran announced that it would expel people living illegally from the country.
