Heavy rain in Mumbai has delayed the Women’s World Cup final in Navi Mumbai. There was a forecast for rain later in the afternoon, but it arrived sooner than expected, and play was delayed.
The rain is very heavy, and it will take some time before play can start. Most umpires can wait to get a 20-over game is around the 9:00 PM mark, but there is a forecast for more rain till 7:00 PM. Add to that the time needed to get the ground ready. If play cannot be started today, the match will be pushed to the reserve day.
Reserve Day Weather Forecast
The forecast is not great for the reserve day as well, with a 55 percent chance of rain. If both days are washed out, India and South Africa will share the trophy. But both teams will be devastated by the result. India have played two finals before but lost both, while this is South Africa’s maiden 50-over World Cup final. It is an opportunity for the teams to win the maiden World Cup, and if rain plays spoilsport and the trophy is shared, it will be a setback.
But there is plenty of time left today and tomorrow, and there is no reason to believe we will not get enough time to get at least a 20-over game.
Road To The Final
India’s road to the final was not smooth as the team lost to South Africa, Australia and England, and faced a must win situation against New Zealand where they picked a comprehensive win before beating Australia in the semis. South Africa lost the first game to England and later won five games in a row before losing to Australia. The team beat England in the semis to reach the final.
