Punjab and Haryana High Court has given an important decision regarding the increase in dog bite incidents. The court said that the number of stray dogs on the streets has increased significantly. In such a situation, if someone is bitten by these dogs, both the state governments will have to pay compensation. The court ordered compensation of Rs 10,000 per tooth mark to the victim. Along with this, the court also ordered the state governments to make guidelines for this.
The bench of Justice Vinod S Bhardwaj expressed concern over the increasing incidents of dog bites in Chandigarh. S Bhardwaj’s bench gave this decision while disposing of 193 petitions. The bench said that if tooth marks are formed due to dog bite, then the victim should be given a compensation of Rs 10,000 per tooth mark. Apart from this, if there is a skin wound or flesh is removed due to dog bite, then a minimum compensation of Rs 20,000 should be given for every 0.2 cm wound.

Court ordered the government to make guidelines
The High Court said that it will be the responsibility of both the state governments to pay the compensation. The bench of Justice Vinod S Bhardwaj said that the state government can recover the compensation amount from any person or agency who has any connection with the dog. The court said that the incidents of dog bites are continuously increasing. Many people have died. If this is not controlled then the cases will increase further. Therefore now the state government should take responsibility for this. The court also ordered the government to make guidelines for this.
