Why do we celebrate Gopashtami festival?

According to the popular story, when Lord Krishna was young, he saw his friends going to the forest to graze cows and he also started insisting on going to the forest. Then Mother Yashoda made Kanha worship the cows at an auspicious time and only after that sent him to the forest to graze the cows. That day was the Ashtami Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. Since then the festival of Gopashtami is being celebrated on this date.
